Christmas was usually a busy time of year for BSI, and this year was no different. The factory staff was kept busy as usual. With a week to go before the holiday, a lot of people were working overtime. And I was paying them well to do so, so why not?

I was not exempt and found myself grabbing a nail gun or two some evenings to assist with finishing off some trim here and there. The complex would be closed from Christmas Eve to January second, and no factory projects were to be left incomplete. All hands were needed on deck to get every building out, and it was with satisfaction that a full eight days before Christmas Eve that we entered the finishing stages for the last three projects that would be picked up in five days. Then it would be on to cleaning up and preparing for the new year. Very few departments did not have an overtime workload with which to contend, and so many nights, the car park was full up to ten.

Though I was up to my ears in work, I made time for Syreta, or at least, made time to find an excuse to be in Syreta’s space.

The Christmas rush gave me the perfect excuse for making daily trips to Engineering and Development under the pretense of checking on what designs would be coming up for the new year. Mitch was also out of office, so I stepped in to pinch-hit where needed. As a result, I became a daily visitor to the department. I started to coincide my visitation times with when I knew Syreta would be in the workshop. I also made it my point of duty to want to examine whatever project it was she happened to be doing.

At first, she was a bit wary of my constant hovering, but by the third day, I sensed that she had started to relax somewhat. Good. The more comfortable she became around me, the better. By the week before Christmas, I knew that tongues were wagging. Staff had gotten into the habit of pointing out whichever workstation she happened to be at as soon as I stepped into the workshop. I made no secret about heading straight to her. I would listen to her explain what was in front of her and ask the pertinent questions.

I had given her the go-ahead to begin working on the design for the dormer pod. So far, she had come up with three designs and unique layouts and was now at the stage of building the miniatures. At this rate, they would be ready for her to continue when she moved to Innovations in January. Unknown to her, I intended to make her the project manager when they got to the factory stage and planned to enter a collaboration with her to patent the concept. All Mitch and I had to do was keep her designs under wraps and plant the bogus pieces. Lately, it seemed as if the moles had gone underground.
